March Block Two: Double Spin Wheels

You will need 3 Fabrics:

  • 1 Background Fabric
  • 2 Different Colored Fabrics

Hint: You can choose light and dark, light and medium or Medium and dark. Let your fabric palette speak to you. Use the Coloring Diagram as needed.

1 – Cut:

  • Background Fabric:
    • Cut (1) strip 3 7/8” x 17” then Sub Cut (4): 3 7/8” x 3 7/8”
  • Lighter Colored Fabric:
    • Cut (1) strip 3 1/2“ x 15” then Sub Cut (4): 3 1/2“ x 3 1/2”
      Keep these squares separate from the other squares you will be cutting
    • Cut (1) strip 3 7/8” x 9” then Sub Cut (2): 3 7/8” x 3 7/8”
  • Darker Colored Fabric:
    • Cut (1) strip 3 7/8” x 25” then Sub Cut (6): 3 7/8” x 3 7/8”

2 – Mark: Mark all darker fabric squares with a diagonal line across the back. You can use a light pencil or a removable fabric type of marker. Frixion pens work well.

3 – Lay Out: Lay the marked dark fabric squares, right sides together with the background squares and the lighter colored squares.

You should have:

  • 4 pairs of darker choice fabric with background fabric
  • 2 pairs of darker choice fabric with the lighter choice fabric

4 – Sew: Using the chain method sew a scant 1/4″ on each side of the solid marked line. Clip chain apart.

5 – Cut: Cut the sewn squares through the solid marked line.

When complete, you should have:

  • 8 half square triangles with dark and background fabric
  • 4 half square triangles with light and dark fabric
  • 4 squares of light fabric.

6 – Trim and Press: Set your seams and press the seam to the darker side. Trim off the corner seam pieces. Your squares should measure 3 1/2“ x 3 1/2”.

7 – Lay Out: Layout your blocks to match the shown diagram. Then sew together. Set your seams and press to one side.

8 – Complete: Your completed block should measure 12 1/2” x 12 1/2”.
