2026 Mystery Quilt Challenge: Getting Started

Instructions by Julie. Posted by Tia. (See PDF version)
Here are a few things you will need to know as we begin our mystery adventure!

1. The Finished Quilt

The final quilt size will be 60” X 84”.

  • Block Size: Each block will measure 12.5” (unfinished).
  • There will be 35 blocks in total.
  • Difficulty: Patterns will range from simple to medium difficulty.

2. You will need:

Enclosed fabric – 2ydsThis has been selected based on your color responses. This fabric will be used in the first step of the Mystery Quilt and will act as the continuity throughout the quilt.  In the first step, you will use 1.25 yards. You will have ¾ yard left. You can save this for your binding, use it in other blocks, or choose not to use it at all

Fabric You Need to Provide: In addition to what I sent, you will need to gather:

  • 3-4 yards Background Fabric. You can use a single fabric that will be used throughout your quilt. Or you can go for a “scrappy” look. If you want a scrappy look, I have attached pictures of “low volume” fabrics that work great for a mixed background. You can use various shades of tone on tones that also give a scrappy look. (See Samples of low volume fabrics.)
  • 2-3 support fabrics for additional blocks (instructions will be sent to you monthly)
You can buy new fabrics or shop your stash as we go. You can go scrappy or coordinated. Remember your choices should complement the fabric sent to you. That is part of the challenge 😊

3. The Schedule

  • Month 1 (Right Now): Create 18 Nine-Patch blocks.
  • Months 2–8: We will make 2 blocks per month.      * Sent to you via email
  • Month 10: 1 final block and assemble the quilt top.   *  Sent to you via email.
  • Goal: Complete all blocks and quilt top by the end of October 2026

4. Posting Progress

There are 11 people participating in this challenge! As we complete our blocks, I really encourage you to share photos on the Facebook page.

Because everyone is using a different color scheme, it is so fun to see how the exact same block looks completely different depending on the fabric used. Posting helps encourage and inspire everyone else who is sewing along with you.

Let’s get stitching!
