October Block One: Double Friendship Star

Instructions by Julie. Posted by Tia. (See PDF copy)

Julie’s Note: This block itself isn’t too difficult to assemble.

You will need 3 Fabrics, with an Optional Center that uses 2 Fabrics: Use the Coloring Diagram as needed.

Step 1 – Cut:

  • Background Fabric:
    • Cut (2) 4 7/8” squares then Sub Cut on one diagonals
    • Cut (4) 4 1/2” squares
  • Fabric One: Large Star Points
    • Cut (2) 4 7/8” squares then Sub Cut on one diagonal
  • Fabric Two: Small Star Points
    • Cut (4) 3 1/2” squares
  • Optional Fabric Three: Center Square Corners
    • Cut (2) 2 7/8” squares then Sub Cut on one diagonal
  • Optional Accent Fabric: Center Square
    • Cut (1) 3 3/8” square

Julie’s Note: If you wish to use only one fabric for the center square, eliminate the Optional Fabric Three and Optional Accent Fabric. Cut (1) 4 1/2” square in the color of your choice.

Step 2 – Mark: Mark all the 3 1/2” Fabric Two squares with a diagonal across the back. This should be done with a light pencil or a removable fabric type of marker. Frixion pens work well.

Step 3 – Make Large HST: Assemble the (4) Large HST blocks as shown in the diagram below. Set your seams and press.

Step 4 – Make Dual Point Squares: Using the Large HST Blocks from Step 3 and the 3 1/2” Fabric Two squares, place the Fabric Two squares on the corner of the Large HST Blocks as seen in the diagram below. Trim 1/4” from the drawn line. Set your seams and press. The finished Dual Point Squares should measure 4 1/2” square.

Julie’s Note: If you wish to use only one fabric for the center square, skip Steps 5 & 6. Use the (1) 4 1/2” square in the color of your choice in place of the Center Block.

Step 5 – Start Center Block: Start assembling the Center Block as shown in the diagram below. Set your seams and press.

Step 6 – Finish Center Block: Finish assembling the Center Block as shown in the diagram below. Set your seams and press. The Center Block should measure 4 1/2” square.

Step 7 – Arrange: Arrange (1) Center Block or Center Square, (4) Background Fabric Corner Squares, and (4) Dual Point Blocks as shown in the diagram. Sew together in order shown in the diagram.

Step 8 – Complete: Your completed block should measure 12 1/2” x 12 1/2” square.
