From the 2026 Sew Flake Mystery Quilt Challenge

September Block One: Morning Star (Option A)
– Using the Stitch-and-Flip method

You will need 4 Fabrics: Use the Coloring Diagram as needed.

1 – Cut:        

  • Background Fabric:
    • Cut (4) 3 1/8” squares
    • Cut (4) 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles
    • Cut (1) 2 1/2” x 21” strip then Sub Cut (8) 2 1/2” squares
  • Fabric One (Corner Fabric):
    • Cut (4) 1 7/8” x 3 1/8” rectangles
    • Cut (4) 1 7/8” x 4 1/2” rectangles
  • Fabric Two (Arrow Fabric):
    • Cut (4) 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles
    • Cut (1) 2 1/2” x 21” strip then Sub Cut (8) 2 1/2” squares
  • Accent Fabric (Center Fabric):
    • Cut (1) 4 1/2” square

Julie’s Note: This block uses 1/4” seams

2 – Make Corner Blocks: All (4) Corner Blocks use the (4) 3 1/8” Background Fabric squares and all Fabric One (Corner Fabric) rectangles. Assemble the blocks as shown in the diagram below. Set your seams and press. Finished Corner Blocks should measure 4 1/2” square.

3 – Make First Four Flying Geese: The first four Flying Geese use the (4) 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” Background Fabric rectangles and the (8) 2 1/2” Fabric Two (Arrow Fabric) squares. Assemble the blocks as shown in the diagram below. Set your seams and press. Finished Flying Geese should measure 2 1/2” x 4 1/2”

4 – Make Second Four Flying Geese: The second four Flying Geese use the (4) 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” Fabric Two (Arrow Fabric) rectangles and the (8) 2 1/2” Background Fabric squares. Assemble the blocks as shown in the diagram below. Set your seams and press. Finished Flying Geese should measure 2 1/2” x 4 1/2”.

5 – Make Arrow Blocks: Using the finished flying geese, sew the (4) Arrow Blocks as shown below. Set your seams and press. Finished Arrow Blocks should measure 4 1/2” square.

6 – Arrange: Arrange (1) Center Square, (4) Corner Blocks, and (4) Arrow Blocks as shown in the diagram. Sew together in order shown in the diagram.

7 – Complete: Your completed block should measure 12 1/2” x 12 1/2” square.
