August Block One: Indiana Puzzle

Instructions by Julie. Posted by Tia. (See PDF copy)

You will need 2 Fabrics: Use the Coloring Diagram as needed.

1 – Cut:

  • Background Fabric:
    • Cut (1) 4 1/2” x 4 1/2” square (Keep this separate from the other squares cut)
    • Cut (4) 4 7/8” x 4 7/8” squares
Note: You can cut 5” squares and trim them down to a 4 12” block, after sewing the triangle blocks.
  • Dark One (or Medium)
    • Cut (1) 2 1/2” x 11” strip then Sub Cut (4) 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” squares
    • Cut (4) 4 7/8” x 4 7/8” squares
    • Note: You can cut 5” squares and trim them down to a 4 ½” block, after sewing the triangle blocks.

2 – Mark: Mark all the Background 4 7/8” x 4 7/8” squares and all the Dark 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” squares with a diagonal across the back. This should be done with a light pencil or a removable fabric type of marker. Frixion pens work well.

3 – Make Triangle Blocks: Place the Background Fabric square with the right sides together with the Dark Fabric (or Medium) 4 7/8” x 4 7/8” squares. Chain stitch all four 4 7/8” x 4 7/8” squares with a scant 1/4” seam on each side of the marked line.

ut the sewn squares through the solid marked line. Cut off the tails on the corner. Set the seam and press the seam to the darker side. Trim if necessary. The finished block should measure 4 1/2” x 4 1/2”. Make 8 Triangle Blocks total.

Julie’s Note: Refer to the June 2026 instructions for tips on sewing square on point for this next step. The points of the Corner Blocks do not reach the outer edge. This is how it needs to be. There needs to be a 1/4″ seam allowance for the future steps

4 – Start the Center Block: Sew (2) Dark Fabric (or Medium) 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” squares to opposite corners of (1) Background Fabric 4 1/2” x 4 1/2” square. See diagram. The finished block should measure 4 1/2” x 4 1/2”.

5 – Finish Center Block: Sew (2) Dark Fabric (or Medium) 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” squares to the remaining opposite corners of (1) Background Fabric 4 1/2” x 4 1/2” square. See diagram.

6 – Arrange: Arrange (1) Center Square and (8) Triangle Blocks as shown in the diagram. Sew together in order shown in the diagram.

7 – Complete: Your completed block should measure 12 1/2” x 12 1/2” square.
